The UNESCO Global Geoparks award was created in November 2015 by the UNESCO General Conference. UNESCO Global Geoparks are therefore a further category of UNESCO sites of UNESCO cultural and natural heritage alongside the World Heritage Sites and the Biosphere Reserves. There are currently a total of 195 UNESCO geoparks in 48 countries worldwide.

All of these geoparks are members of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). UNESCO Global Geoparks is not just about strengthening cooperation with the local population in the Geoparks, but also about cooperating with other UNESCO Global Geoparks worldwide, sharing expertise, advancing strategic issues and starting joint projects.

In addition to the Global Geoparks Network, there are also regional networks, such as the European Geoparks Network (EGN). This network also focuses on exchanging experiences and ideas.

The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall has been awarded as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2022.
