French clarinettist Arthur Stockel has established himself as a passionate and eclectic musician through his virtuoso career as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral musician. Appointed principal clarinettist of the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg at the age of 21, his curiosity and passion have already marked him out as one of the great musicians of his generation.
Versatile as a Swiss army knife, but infinitely more melodious, Arthur brings out the versatility of his instrument by invoking a wide range of styles, benefiting from the subtle lyrical and vocal qualities of the clarinet. Winner of first prize at the prestigious international competition in Ghent in 2022, he tours throughout Europe as a soloist.
In January 2025, he released his first album of concertos and quintets by Weber, which he recorded with the Hanson Quartet and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg under the direction of Leo McFall. The album was released in collaboration with the Aparté label.
An accomplished orchestral musician, Arthur trained with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra Academy. He was invited to perform as principal clarinet with Gianandrea Noseda and the London Symphony Orchestra on their 2019 European tour. He is also a regular guest with orchestras such as the Orchestre de Paris, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Marinski Theatre Orchestra.
Arthur Stockel is known as a sensitive and generous chamber musician and has recently performed at the renowned Marlboro Festival in the USA and the Krzyzowa Music Festival in Poland. Among other things, he played Messiaen's “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” at the Royal Albert Hall in London on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the armistice of the First World War.
Arthur Stockel is also passionate about creating and building bridges between different musical aesthetics. After spending the summer of 2020 at the Paris jazz jam sessions, he devised a project to unite his new love of jazz and his classical roots by bringing together musicians from both worlds. The result was a work entitled “Bewitched”, which presents an exciting new world of sound.

Arthur Stockel, who was born and raised in a family of amateur musicians, began playing the clarinet at the age of seven with Guy Egler and then studied with Alain Toiron at the Conservatoire de Colmar. He graduated from the Conservatoire régional de Paris (CRR) in clarinet interpretation and bass clarinet and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in clarinet with honors from the Conservatoire de Paris (CNSMDP) in the class of Pascal Moraguès. He was then admitted to the master's program at the renowned Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin to continue his studies with Martin Spangenberg.
