Katerina Avdieieva (piano) and Renata van der Vyver (viola), both teachers at the Echternach music school will be joined by Katerina’s daughter, Evgenia Avdieieva (violin), to play exemplary musical compositions from the middle to late classical period. The compositions written by W.A.Mozart specifically features the beautiful dialogue that can exist between the violin and the viola, two incredibly well matched instruments in the hands of a brilliant composer. Lesser known, but equally skilled composers, F.W. Rust and F.A. Hoffmeister will also be featured on this program.
Katerina Avdieieva., from Ukraine, studied at the National Academy of Music in Lviv and then taught piano for 11 years in Lviv, while performing as concert pianist. She is currently piano teacher and accompanist at the Echternach music school.
Evgenia Avdieieva, born in 2007, studied at a special international school in Lyiv and then for 5 years at the Central Conservatoire School in Moscow. She is a laureate of numerous masterclasses and has performed as a soloist with orchestra several times. Evgenia is currently studying at the celebrated Yehudi Menuhin School in Great Britain.
Renata van der Vyver, native South African, moved from the United States, where she was studying and working for 11 years, to Luxembourg in 2015. In Luxembourg she has the joy of playing in various chamber and orchestral groups while teaching viola and violin the Echternach music school.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) is well known as a child prodigy who then grew up to be one of the most significant composers of his time. His duos for violin and viola no.1 and no.2 have originally been attributed as compositions by Michael Haydn, the brother of Joseph Haydn, both of whom were close friends to Mozart. The reason for the wrongful attribution of these duets is simply because Mozart was helping his friend in need, Michael Haydn, to complete a commission of six duets for the Archbishop of Colloredo in 1783.
Friedrich Wilhelm Rust (1739-1796) had an illustrious career as a violinist, pianist, composer, and educator in Dessau, where he also was appointed as court music director in 1796. His second Sonata for solo violin the is unusually elaborate for a solo violin piece of its time. Even though stylistically rooted in Classical technique and counterpoint, the composition’s expressive contrasts and structural daring lend a Romantic sensibility.
Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was both a music publisher and highly accomplished composer from Vienna. He published his own works as well as those of the leading composing contemporaries, including Mozart and Beethoven. His 12 Etudes for viola is very virtuosically written, which was still quite a novelty for viola repertoire at the time.
The Sinfonia Concertante in E-flat major, by W.A. Mozart, was written in 1779, when Mozart was only 23 years of age. The work is a highly revered example from the crossover between the symphonic and concerto genres of the time. There is seamless interaction between the soloists and orchestra while rich harmonies are re-enforced by having two separate tutti viola voices in the orchestra. A salient feature in all of mozart’s instrumental music is his operatic incorporations. With the Sinfonia Concertante being no exception, you will hear a beautiful conversational dialogue between the solo violin and viola parts, which nears to overtures of love during the second movement of the composition.
