LOW DENSITY CORPORATION: Pioneers of Trip-Pop Alternatif
Formed in Luxembourg in the late 1990s, Low Density Corporation emerged as a groundbreaking force in the nation's pop-rock scene with their distinctive blend of trip-hop and alternative sounds. Led by the frontman and lyricist Rocco Russo and Olivier Toth on synths and programming, the band quickly captured attention with their debut EP, "Low Density Corporation featuring Galliver," released in 1999. Tracks like "Ode to my Stupidity" and "Disconnected" marked a departure from the blues and commercial pop prevalent at the time, offering audiences a refreshing and somewhat shocking musical experience.
Following their debut success, the band underwent several lineup changes and embarked on numerous concerts, culminating in the release of their highly anticipated second album,
"Trash," in 2003. This album represented a significant evolution in the band's sound, as they spent four years exploring new musical directions and refining their compositions.
Rocco, alongside Olivier, spearheaded the creative direction of the group. Their collaborative process involved extensive experimentation and revision, resulting in meticulously crafted songs that showcased their dedication to innovation. While some critics noted a lack of spontaneity in their music, the band embraced the polished aesthetic as a deliberate artistic choice, reflecting their commitment to creating melodic, pop-infused tracks with a futuristic edge.
Unlike many of their peers who disbanded after their debut album, Low Density Corporation persevered, solidifying their reputation as a formidable live act in addition to their studio work. Their performances characterised by clear structures, infectious melodies, and a dynamic mix of programmed samples and live instrumentation, captivated audiences and contributed to their growing international following.
In fact, Rocco's lyrics, often delving into themes of futurism and existentialism, reflected a broader worldview that resonated with audiences beyond their homeland.
Drawing inspiration from diverse influences ranging from 1980s pop icons like Duran Duran and Depeche Mode to contemporary trip-hop, as well as cinematic references, Low Density Corporation crafted a sound that defied easy categorisation. Their willingness to incorporate unconventional elements, such as programmed samples of Japanese manga characters, underscored their creative versatility and experimental spirit.
After a pause of 15 years, during which members pursued individual endeavours and explored new musical horizons, Low Density Corporation reunited for a new musical adventure. With their signature blend of innovative soundscapes and thought-provoking lyrics, the band once again captivates audiences, proving that their influence and relevance endure even after years of absence.
The current lineup consists, alongside Rocco and Olivier, of long-time drummer Gilles Wagner and bassist Gilles Loes. These seasoned bandmates have been instrumental in shaping the band's sonic landscape, contributing to the evolution of their sound over the years. Additionally, the ethereal touch of Faye Reiser's vocals adds an extra layer of depth to their compositions, solidifying the harmonious synergy within the group.
As their legacy continues to unfold, Low Density Corporation remains a testament to the enduring power of artistic exploration and innovation. With each release, they push the boundaries of genre and expectation, cementing their status as pioneers of trip-pop alternatif.
THEM LIGHTS
Enter the kaleidoscopic mind of Sacha Hanlet, singer, songwriter and record-producer based in Luxembourg.
While some listeners know the musician as drummer from the instrumental math-rock outfit MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, known for their kinetic display of energy and extensive touring across Europe, Asia and North America, THEM LIGHTS transcends the boundaries of live instrumentation oscillating between Blade Runner-arpeggios, dark electronica and a mainstream sensibility.
With his confident production style, Sacha Hanlet excels at building vibe and atmosphere always highlighting the range of his soulful voice.
.
Take for starters the falsetto-driven `Estanque` where eastern-tinged electronics slowly build before morphing into a mind-bending chorus driven by an indelible hookline that proves hard to resist. It’s wistfully romantic, visceral and instantly pleasurable.
The visual aspect of this project speaks to Sacha Hanlet’s interest in exploring different creative spaces. Building on his expertise as a lighting designer, this bold aesthetic channels the haunted reveries of the 80’s – a pop cultural period that opens up dream landscapes and unconscious visions. Taking cues from the spectral RnB of The Weeknd, the rapture of Thriller-period MJ and synthesizing them with the trailblazing works of contemporary hip hop. Them Lights is a mysterious pop enigma in its own right.
