Pascal Schumacher & Danae Dörken
Echter'Classic Festival
Glass Two
Come and discover the winners of the Opus Klassik 2025 prize in the ‘New Classical Music’ category live in Echternach.
The Luxembourg vibraphonist Pascal Schumacher embarks on an exploration of the works of Philip Glass with his ambitious project GLASS I-III. The second project, GLASS TWO, is a collaboration with the German-Greek pianist Danae Dörken. The two won the Opus Klassik 2025 in the “New Classical Music” category for their joint album.
Glass is a central figure in minimal music and is known for his clear structures, repetitive patterns and influences ranging from Indian and Western classical music to jazz and pop. In GLASS TWO, Schumacher and Dörken reinterpret his pieces for vibraphone and piano, giving them both texture and depth. Metamorphosis Four, for example, is enriched by a vibraphone part, while Mishima Closing - originally written for string quartet - is distilled into a duo arrangement in keeping with Glass' minimalist aesthetic.
Pianist Danae Dörken impresses with her technique, stage presence and musical depth. Encouraged by Yehudi Menuhin at the age of seven, she performed in major concert halls from an early age. After studying with Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and Lars Vogt, she regularly works with leading orchestras. Highlights of the 2024/25 season include a performance at Lincoln Center and an album with Mikis Theodorakis' Piano Concerto. In 2023, she released Apollo & Dionysos with her sister Kiveli and three albums with oboist Philippe Tondre. Her album “Odyssey” was nominated for international music awards.
The vibraphonist and composer Pascal Schumacher combines melodic structures with jazz and classical music and is known for his nuanced tone. He studied in Luxembourg, Strasbourg, Brussels and The Hague and has received numerous awards, including the Django d'Or (2005) and the ECHO Jazz Award (2012). In 2018, he began producing solo material, resulting in the albums “Sol” (2020) and “Luna” (2022). In 2023 he founded the jazz trio SINGÜLAR. Pascal is a professor at the Conservatoire de Luxembourg, director of the “Reset” festival and ambassador for SOS Children's Villages.
