This small grotto near the Perekop rock was probably chosen by the Redemptorists. During World War II, a family from Berdorf prayed here for their four forcibly conscripted sons.
This small grotto is located in the vicinity of the Perekop rock. The statue of Our Lady that was erected here bears the name ‘Beau Lis de Notre Vallée’. This place was probably chosen by the Redemptorist order (1901 to 1960 in Echternach). “Beau Lis” probably refers to a “beautiful lily”, the symbol of the purity of the Virgin Mary.
During the war from 1941 to 1945, four sons of a family from Berdorf were forcibly conscripted. The family lived near the Birkelt neighbourhood. From here, a path led through the small forest valley to this grotto. The family probably made a pilgrimage along this path to the grotto during the turmoil of war to pray for their sons who had been forced into military service. In front of the statue of the Virgin Mary, they prayed for protection for their sons, that they would survive the dangerous war effort and return home safe and sound at the end of the war.
