The monument in Medernach commemorates the efforts of the 9th US Armoured Division during the Battle of the Bulge.

The Battle of the Bulge in 1944/1945 was an attempt by the German Wehrmacht to inflict losses on the Allies and recapture territory. After the Americans liberated Luxembourg in September 1944, the German Wehrmacht's counteroffensive caused heavy losses among the Americans. The memorial commemorates the American soldiers who risked their lives in Medernach.
