Steinheim
Where? L-6585 Steinheim
Steinheim is located in the Sauer Valley between Echternach and Rosport, close to the German border. The village is an ideal starting point for hikes through forests and impressive rock formations, as well as cycling tours along the Sauer River.
Steinheim is located in the municipality of Rosport-Mompach, directly on the Sauer River, which forms the border between Luxembourg and Germany. Above the village, wooded slopes, meadows and impressive dolomite rock formations invite visitors to explore the surrounding countryside.
One of the highlights is the approximately 8.7 km long local circular hiking trail R8, which starts at the “Fraihof” cultural centre in Rue de la Montagne. The trail initially follows old village footpaths, known locally as “Peedercher”, before continuing through varied woodland and rocky landscapes. Highlights include the impressive “Alkummer” rocky gorge, beautiful views of the Sauer Valley and a 360-degree panorama from the highest point of the hike.
Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail also passes above Steinheim. Between Echternach and Rosport, this long-distance hiking trail leads through forests, past striking rock formations and across open meadows, offering beautiful views of the Sauer Valley.
For cyclists, the national cycle path PC3 follows the Sauer River through Steinheim. The signposted Tudor Tour also passes through the village and climbs from here towards Rosport, reaching the hills above the Sauer Valley.
Another distinctive feature of the village is Maison viticole Roeder, a local winery reflecting the area's wine-growing tradition.
