Lourdes Grotto „Gefale Leeën“ Steinheim

Where? L-6585 Steinheim

The Lourdes Grotto “Op Kuerderts” was built in 1913 by the residents of Steinheim. Located along hiking trail R8, it offers a beautiful view of the Sûre Valley.

The grotto was built in 1913 by the residents of Steinheim as a community effort. Stones were collected from nearby fields and forests around the site known as “Op Kuerderts”. The inauguration took place on August 15, 1913, on the Feast of the Assumption.

The grotto is still preserved today, and the local hiking trail R8 passes right by it. From there, visitors can enjoy a wonderful view of the Sûre Valley and the village of Steinheim.

In the past, people used to visit the grotto after vespers, a custom that has faded over time. Each year on St. Lawrence’s Day, a procession organized by the parish took place to pray for a good harvest and protection from storms. This procession no longer takes place today.

The cave can be reached via hiking trail R8 in Steinheim. It is about 2 km from the “Boeschwee” road up the mountain to the cave.
