Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town, combines a rich historical and cultural heritage with the natural landscapes of the Mullerthal Region. The Basilica of St Willibrord, the historic old town, the Echternach Hopping Procession and Echternach Lake are among the town’s best-known sights and experiences.
Echternach lies on the River Sûre, directly on the Luxembourg-German border, and is the oldest town in Luxembourg. The town developed around the abbey founded by Willibrord in 698.
In the historic centre, visitors can discover the former Benedictine abbey and the Basilica of St Willibrord, which houses the tomb of Saint Willibrord. Around the market square, the Dënzelt, historic buildings and remains of the medieval town wall shape the townscape.
Echternach is internationally known for its traditional Hopping Procession. It takes place every year on Whit Tuesday and was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.
Echternach is also an important starting point for hikers. Route 1 of the Mullerthal Trail starts at the basilica and leads from the town into the varied landscapes of the Mullerthal Region. In addition, the Comfort Hiking Trail around Echternach Lake and numerous local hiking trails offer further opportunities to explore the town and its surroundings on foot.
On the outskirts of the town lies Echternach Lake, offering various leisure and recreational activities. The Roman Villa and its museum are also located by the lake and provide insights into the town’s Roman past.
