Lourdes-Grotte Girsterklaus
Where? 7, Girsterklaus, L-6559 Girsterklaus
The Lourdes Grotto in Girsterklaus was built in 1910 by the hermit of the time. It lies near the chapel of Girsterklaus, the oldest pilgrimage site in Luxembourg.
In Girsterklaus, not far from the chapel, near the small cottage, there is a Lourdes grotto, which was built in 1910 by the former responsible of the chapel.
The grotto was built with unhewn, yellow sandstone, giving the impression of a rock face with niches. There is also a sandstone altar under an arched entrance. On the right side there is a smaller, narrow grotto with a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. The statue is said to date from the time the grotto was built. The statue of St Bernadette stands at ground level behind the fence.
Near the grotto, there is the chapel of Girsterklaus, which was built in the 14th century on even older foundations. The chapel is the oldest place of pilgrimage in the Grand Duchy. The pilgrimage leads to the miraculous image of Our Lady of the Hazel Tree, a wooden statue from the 13th century.
