Monument aux Morts - War Memorial Echternach

Where? Rue du Pont, L-6470 Echternach

The War Memorial was inaugurated in 1966 to commemorate the victims of the Second World War.

The Latin chronogram inscribed on the Luxembourg sandstone is a prose inscription containing a number of letters that also represent numbers.

TRVCI DE RVINA ERECTA VRBE VICTIMIS NOVATA SACRATVR ARX

The sum of these letters gives 1945, the year World War II ended.

The inscription reads as follows: RISEN FROM TERRIBLE RUINS, THE CITY DEDICATES THE NEWLY DESIGNED CITADEL TO ITS DEAD.

“Citadel” refers to the hill on which the parish church stands, which resembles a fortress with its imposing walls.
