Museum of the Abbey Echternach
Echternach Abbey was founded by St Willibrord in 698 and dissolved in 1797. Part of the vaulted basement houses the abbey museum.
The former monastery buildings in Echternach, which have been preserved to this day, date back to 1727. A scriptorium was established in Echternach immediately after the monastery was founded at the end of the 7th century. Books were written and painted there for religious services and school lessons. The most beautiful works were created in the VIII and XI centuries. There are no original books left in the Abbey Museum, only very good copies, also known as facsimiles.
The Abbey Museum offers a glimpse of some pages of the history of Echternach, the Roman villa, facsimiles of the works of the scriptorium, the life and devotion of Saint Willibrord, archaeological remains.
