Description
The Alzette cycle path (PC 15) connects the Centre circuit (PC1) in Dommeldange and the Sûre-Moyenne cycle path (PC16) in Ettelbruck and passes through Steinsel, Lintgen, and Mersch.
The most impressive castle is the current residence of the Grand Ducal family in Colmar-Berg. The route runs along the entire way along the Luxembourg-Ettelbrück railway line, so you can combine your trip with a train ride or even return to Luxembourg City by train.
From Mersch, which is halfway along the route, a detour into the idyllic Eischtal valley with its numerous castles and fortresses is especially recommended.
Follow the course of the Alzette through the capital to the gates of the Luxembourg Ardennes. Explore beautiful rural landscapes with meadows and orchards, scattered with isolated castles. Continuing on the CR345, you go through Welsdorf, Schirenermillen, Birtrange, and Grentzingen to finally arrive in Ettelbrück.
Directions
The starting point of the PC15 cycle path is located east of Beggen near a small bridge over the Alzette. Here is the connection point to the PC1 Centre cycle path. From here, the PC15 leads northwards up the Alzette valley over the fields and the "Gewännchen" towards Walferdange. Currently, users still have to cross the N7 at the level of the cultural center, but plans are in place to tunnel under the road to facilitate passage for cyclists. In Steinsel, the cycle path joins the CR124 towards Mullendorf, with the Alzette remaining on the right side. After a few hundred meters on the CR124, the cycle path turns right and runs parallel to the N7. It passes through the fields, reaches the village of Bofferdange and then Helmdange, and crosses the Alzette at "Brill" in Lorentzweiler to continue towards Hünsdorf. From Hünsdorf, the cycle path goes through the "Schwunnendall" on the CR123 and crosses the "Millebaach", with the Alzette on the right side. Before reaching its next stop, the town of Prettingen, the cycle path uses the CR123 road, which is open to traffic in the opposite direction, and continues parallel to the N7, passing under the new overpass of the Autoroute du Nord (A7). The cycle path continues eastward on the CR123, where it crosses the Alzette again and takes the CR101 to reach Lintgen. Between the football pitch and the railway tracks (Luxembourg-Ettelbrück), it turns left to continue along the tracks, following them through Gosseldange, Rollingen, Berschbach to Mersch, where it crosses the Alzette at the entrance to Mersch. It is also possible to consult the tourist information at the train station in Mersch. Behind Mersch station, turn left and ride through the fields over the "Roudebierg" (with the highest point on this cycle path), "Eischschleed" and "Bilsbierg" to Pettingen, where the cycle path circles the castle ruins and runs a few meters on the CR306. Then it turns right towards Essingen, on the left bank of the Alzette. At the entrance to Colmar-Berg, the cycle path passes under the A7, the Route du Nord, before entering Colmar-Berg. At the entrance to the Morisackre housing estate, you now have to turn right to take the new PC15 route opened in 2007. At the Colmar station, turn right to follow the PC15, then left to pass under the N7 bridge. In 2007, a new bridge was built over the Alzette to avoid crossing the N7. Behind the bridge, you reach the PC12 and the center of Colmar-Berg, where the PC15 turns north along the Alzette on a new route opened to cyclists in July 2009. After reaching the town of Schieren, you reach the industrial zone "rue de la gare", always keeping to the left of the railway tracks. In Ettelbrück (Z.A.C. Ettelbrück), you have to turn left at the end of "rue Thill" before reaching the N7. After crossing a roundabout, the cycle path follows the dyke and finally joins the PC16. The former route of the PC15 followed today's PC12 from the cycle bridge towards Colmar-Berg. It then turned right over the tracks onto the CR345A. In Berg, the cycle path followed the CR345 along Berg Park on one side and the Grand Ducal castle on the other. Continuing on the CR345, it went through Welsdorf, Schirenermillen, Birtrange, and Grentzingen to finally arrive in Ettelbrück. The old route of the PC15 combined with the section opened in 2009 offers a nice cycling route in a loop of about ten kilometers between Colmar-Berg and Ettelbrück.
